ARTIST BIO
Hi everyone! My name is Emily Less and I am a freshman at Marist College with a major in Fashion Merchandising. Throughout my years, I have developed many works of art ranging from acrylic paintings, collages, and even the creation of my own font. However, I wasn't always an artist. In my first semester of high school, I was randomly placed into the beginner art class, Design Fundamentals. At the time, I didn't even know how to hold a paint brush. What you could not have convinced me of five years ago was that walking into that class, as the anxious freshman I inevitably was, would completely change the direction in which my life was headed. It would tweak my perspective of the world and enhance the beauty I had never appreciated before like the symmetry in a perfectly designed room or the color balance of a simple outfit. Most importantly, it would help me discover a passion I never would have expected to pursue. Now, I have learned to prioritize art, no matter how busy my schedule gets. My creativity is always flourishing and I am excited to prove that through my portfolio.

EXQUISITE CORSPE PROJECT

This was an interesting project as it was a collaborative effort made by me and my class for the course, Creative Theory. Each person had to create a section of the exquisite corpse's body without seeing the rest of its parts prior to adding onto it. The results are as displayed above.
What I did: Corpse 1 (Head), Corpse 2 (Shoulders), Corpse 3 (Knees), Corpse 4 (Toes)

WORD FOCUS

SOUNDS LIKE
SOMEONE I KNOW
The focus of this project was to capture the complete essence of one specific word. Because "aesthete" is a visually pleasing term, it was important that I reflected that through my work. In many ways, I am an aesthete myself, especially in creating this project.
"The aesthete aims at harmony rather than beauty. If his hair does not match the mauve sunset against which he is standing, he hurriedly dyes his hair another shade of mauve. If his wife does not go with the wall-paper, he gets a divorce."
Gilbert K. Chesterton
FONT

THE PROCESS
For the creation of this font, I used several pencil shavings to generate the form of each letter. Because the shavings moved easily at the slightest breath and touch, I had to maintain an extremely steady hand, making sure not to offset my work. Though the process was a tedious one, I am happy with the results of my creativity.

YOU'RE INVITED!
UGLY COLOR
This project was intriguing and one of my favorites for my Creative Theory class. The assignment was to find an ugly color and to develop it further through the elements displayed below. As seen in the following reference picture, I chose a mustardy yellow from my best friend's decorative pillow. Sorry Gabby!

STILL LIFE
INTRODUCING:
PEARL WHITE
This series is made up of only a few items (because less is obviously more), manipulated to create the illusion of a face. It's quirky, fun, and vibrant as the face's pearly whites are shown off.
THE PEPPERS
& their love story
CONCENTRATION
LIFE WITH BOYS
This concentration reflects my life growing up with all boys. I have two older brothers and one younger brother and that has always influenced the way I grew up and developed as a girl. I aimed to portray all the main elements of growing up under such an influence, as well as capturing the essence of my brothers and myself. My concentration reflects the similarities and differences between my family and I to help viewers understand how that has shaped what I value.

BREADTH

"Creativity is contagious, pass it on."
